The Mountain

Last Friday, August 25, 2023, the third and final album by the late jaimie branch's Fly or Die ensemble was posthumously released.

It's the best record I've heard this year. AOTY.  A masterpiece.  

It's such a goddamn shame that we've lost the jazz voice of a generation with jaimie's passing last year. Listening to the album, titled Fly or Die Fly or Die Fly or Die ((world war)), I alternate between laughing with joy and crying with grief.

To be clear, the sound of the mountain is not typical of the album or of jaimie's oeuvre, but it's the very uniqueness of the track and the way that it stands out from everything else she's recorded that's emblematic of her music and her career. There's no such thing as a "typical" Fly or Die track.  

RIP, jaimie.  You are missed.
