The Mediterranean

Twelve bands in 10 1/2 hours yesterday. So much for my plan of sticking to one stage, and not running from band to band. I may have to pace myself a little bit more today.

But meanwhile, away from the stage(s), here's a picture of the Mediterranean, the hotel I'm staying at here in Seattle (there's also a cell phone pic from the roof of the hotel in Friday's post). When I purchased my airline ticket way back on June 9, I also booked a room at the Mediterranean through hotels.com for about a hundred dollars off of their on-line asking price - not a huge discount, but almost a full night's stay.  The great part, though, is that the hotel is only about a block away from the Key Center and all of the Bumbershoot events. The staff here has been great to me, and the place seems to be full of bands performing at Bumbershoot.

And to think, I almost didn't stay here because the street address is "Republican Street."

(Thanks to the anonymous person who posted these pictures of the Mediterranean on Google Earth - I've taken some good pictures myself, but since I'm traveling without a laptop (keeping it light), I have no way of posting anything other than cell -phone pictures to the net.)

The big news for today is that I finally get to see Broken Social Scene, whom I missed earlier this year, even though I had tickets, when I came down with the flu ("When Broken Social Scene is the headliner for a major festival, that spells FAIL," a commenter noted). Also on the bill today is Washington State's Lonely Forest, the unfortunately named Com Truise (which is strange, because he's scheduled to play at The Earl in Atlanta tomorrow), surrealist hip-hop rappers Das Racist, L.A.'s Warpaint (another band I missed this year, that time because their show at The Earl sold out before I bought tickets), and School of Seven Bells ("I haven't even heard of most of these bands," sniffed 19-year-old Sharon Esperanza).

To give you a better idea of the musical proceedings, here's a video by tonight's headliners The Kills, which more or less captures the look and feel of their live performance.

It may look like they're a couple, what with all the kissing before their set and all, but the male half, Jamie Hince, recently married supermodel Kate Moss.  The kissing is just a god-luck ritual, plus a fringe benefit I guess of being in a band with Alison Mosshart.
