Last night, the Games Desk finally reached Level 50, the highest player level in Assassin's Creed Odyssey. We felt like the main storyline was starting to wind toward its conclusion or climax, and of the four mythological beasts we're required to slay for one mega-quest, we've slain three (the Sphinx, the Cyclops, and the Minotaur). There's still some cultists and mercenaries running loose that should be dispatched, and that fourth mythological beast, but we thought that after some 180-hours-and-counting of gameplay and finally getting to Level 50, we were finally nearing the end.
But, no. While participating in one of the game's many quests last night, we stumbled from the city-state of Athens into the city-state of Sparta, and realized that a full half of the game map was still unexplored. The map is so big that we've been playing with it zoomed in on Athens and the Greek islands, and had forgotten that there's still another full half of the game yet to be explored and conquered and experienced. Basically, we've been ignoring the entire mainland while we were prancing around the coast and the islands.
At this rate, we may be playing right through to summer.
This is a good thing - we obviously are enjoying the game, and even after all these hours and days and weeks, it still doesn't feel like a chore to play, unlike the ennui we experienced during Fallout 76. (In related news, we got a email today saying that new content and updates have been released for 76, so if we ever do get bored galavanting around ancient Greece, we can always return to a post-nuclear Appalachia.)
Based on our experience with other Assassin's Creed and Ubisoft games, even though we've maxed out at Level 50, we can probably still earn ability points and acquire new skills. It just means that the days of having to run away from higher-level opponents are finally over. Which in turns means we no longer have an alibi to chicken out from encountering a fearsome foe.
Our work is cut out for us.
