Nazi Germany started with a strongman making himself immune to oversight and transferring power from the courts to his cronies. He demonized immigrants, weaponized fear, and built prison camps, not for justice or safety, but for vengeance and retribution. Dachau’s first inmates weren’t Jewish, they were union leaders, journalists, and political enemies.
Today, the playbook is the same, only this time it’s brought to you by Fox News and repackaged as “border security.” Our government is outsourcing its human rights violations to El Salvador, a country running what it literally calls a “Terrorism Confinement Center,” with no trials, no evidence, and no rights and then daring the courts to stop them. They don’t fear the law - they’ve already normalized breaking it. The U.S. Secretary of State even retweeted the comment "Oopsie - too late" after the plane landed in El Salvador despite a judge's order to turn back. The second you can defy the courts and judges without consequence, our democracy is just a facade. It's just an illusion, a tale told by an idiot, signifying nothing.
Every person defending these actions, from White House spokespersons to Attorney Generals to Republicans in Congress to Fox News hosts, are doing the same thing Nazi sympathizers did in the ’30s: inventing new words for old crimes. “Public safety,” “illegal alien,” “national security” - it’s all branding. And the immigrants aren't being "deported." "Deportation" is a legal process with hearings before a judge and following the rules of law - what's happening now is kidnapping and disappearing, human trafficking by the U.S. government. It’s fascism in a red MAGA hat.
And let's be clear: no one is saying bring them back and set them free to roam the streets. The judge is merely ordering them to be brought back so that they can be read the charges against them (if any) and given the chance to address those charges and an opportunity to defend themselves.
Because if you think this ends with immigrants, you haven’t been paying attention. One of the disappeared, Kilmar Abrego Garcia, was previously granted protection from being deported to El Salvador back in 2019 because of "well-founded fear of gang persecution." He was provided a work permit by the Department of Homeland Security and allowed to stay here. He was legally protected. But Trump’s DHS said “nah,” slapped him on a plane, and vanished him into a foreign hellhole. This ends with whoever they want. It ends with you. It ends with anyone who dares say, “this isn’t right.”
This isn't right.
