R.I.P. actor (and former Oakland Raider) Carl Weathers and proto-punk musician Wayne Kramer (MC5). The two men probably never met each other, but they were both born in the same year and they both died within a day of each other in February 2024.
Most people remember Weathers as Apollo Creed in the Rocky movies, but to me he was Dillon in Predator. I was always more of a Terminator/Predator fan that a Rocky-Rambo/Bambi-Dumbo kind of guy. Another whole generation knew him as Greef Karga in the The Mandalorian series.
As a 16-year-old kid, I managed to obtain a copy of Kick Out the Jams, MC5's debut album. It was louder and noisier that the music I was used to, but a certain macho instinct to "go hard" kicked in and I forced myself to assimilate the heavy riffs. "Yeah, I listen to MC5! Who do you like, The Moody Blues?" But despite all my swagger, I still ran across the bedroom to turn down my stereo before track two kicked in and lead singer Rob Tyner shouts, “Kick out the jams, motherfuckers.” That would definitely have pissed off the Moms and gotten me grounded (and my MC5 privileges taken away).
