I didn't go to the show last night by the experimental post-punk band Algiers. That's now the third ticketed show I've sat out. All it took for my monkey mind to justify the decision to stay home already made by my subconscious elephant was a slight uptick in the average number of new covid cases in Georgia and an announcement that the opening act, who've been on tour with Algiers, had to cancel their set because one of their members tested positive. "That's it. I'm out," both the monkey and the elephant agreed.
Now, precisely why my subconscious mind doesn't want to leave the house or go to a show is another matter to be discussed at another time.
Today's post is about sports. I mentioned yesterday that Friday night's Red Sox game against the Tampa Bay Rays (Game 2 of the ALDS) was "one hell of a game." Tonight's Game 3 was even more memorable. It lasted for 13 innings of brain-boiling suspense, and in the top of the 13th, an apparent go-ahead run by Tampa was called back due to an arcane rule. After going scoreless for seven innings, the Sox then got the winning, walk-off homer in the bottom of the 13th. One man was on base at the time, so the final score was 6-4. Incredible game.
As described by The Boston Globe sportswriter Dan Shaughnessy, Major League Baseball’s audience in 2021 is made up of those folks wishing people under 50 still read printed newspapers, and who remember Dwight Eisenhower, daily Mass, and an age when everybody knew who was heavyweight champ of the world. That pretty much describes me (although I never went to Mass), but to my credit, I only follow baseball in the post-season.
Meanwhile, in football, the No. 2 Georgia Bulldogs beat the Auburn Tigers yesterday, advancing their record to 6-0. But just as importantly, the No. 1-ranked Alabama Crimson Tide lost last night at Texas A&M, so now Georgia is the new No. 1 team in the nation! We Georgia fans have been waiting behind Alabama and Clemson for a long time to be able to say that. We're No. 1! The road ahead for the Bulldogs is still challenging, including the always tough road game against Florida, the SEC Championship Game (still probably against Alabama), and then whatever teams the National Playoffs throw at us. Still, but we're as well positioned to be the new National Champion as any year I can remember.
That's it for sports news (or "norts spews" as Funky Winkerbean used to spoonerize it). Talk to 'ya manana.
