Closed Mind

Today is the day for wise conduct. There are 85 more todays left in 2021.

The sun didn't rise this morning until 7:37 a.m., after my alarm clock had already gone off.  It was raining at sunrise, so it wasn't exactly a bright, shining morning.  The sun will set at 7:13 p.m. tonight behind the lingering rain clouds.

On this day in 1992, philosopher and academician Allan Bloom died, presumably of AIDS.  Impermanence is swift.  Bloom is most famous for his book, The Closing of the American Mind.  But on the very day that Bloom died, Mookie Betts was born.  Today's his 29th birthday! Formerly a member of the Boston Red Sox, Betts is currently playing for the Los Angeles Dodgers and went 2-for-4 with no runs in last night's 3-1 win over St. Louis in the National League Wild Card game.

Speaking of the closing of the American mind, as we were a moment ago, on this day in 1996, the Fox News Channel began broadcasting.

Things are pretty calm on the hurricane front right now.  There are currently no named storms out in the Atlantic, and the only system the National Hurricane System is tracking is an unnamed  low-pressure zone off the coast of South Carolina with little chance or organizing into a tropical storm, much less a hurricane. There are eight more weeks left to the 2021 hurricane season.

The average number of new cases per day of the covids keeps dropping in Georgia, and yesterday, it fell below 3,000 cases for the first time since August 1.  Hurray!  For those of you keeping score at home, that's a 70% decrease from the August 1 peak (9,244 cases per day). Accordingly, the number of new hospitalizations per day is also dropping.  However, the best one can say about the number of covids deaths per day in Georgia is that the rate isn't rising.

Tonight, the experimental post-punk band Algiers plays at Gasa Gasa in New Orleans, and then after a night off, they will play Saturday night at The Earl in Atlanta.  I have tickets to the Atlanta show, but am still deciding whether or not it's safe to go.  New covid cases in Georgia are down since the August 21 Bully show at The Earl that I passed on (7,596 cases per day) and the Osees show at Variety Playhouse that I missed on September 29 (3,544 cases).  New cases now average "only" 2,694 per day, and presumably will be even lower, possibly below 2,500, by October 9, the day of the Algiers show.  Is that "safe"?  Proof of vaccination is required for admittance, so there's that to consider.

Sadly, the number of new cases per day will probably never return to zero, although it was as low as 266 back last summer.  How low does it need to be, I wonder, for me to feel comfortable bringing my vaccinated ass back to the clubs?
