In all my life, I don't think I've ever seen politics turn on a dime like they did this week.
This time last week, there was still a bewildering number of contenders all offering different visions of what a Democratic presidential candidate should look like. While I completely sympathized with Sanders' and Warren's ideas of a liberal insurgency, I was worried that the term "socialism" might scare away a lot of moderate voters and the Dems would wind up losing the election. While I could get behind the mainstream platforms of Klobouchar and Buttigieg, neither were inspiring candidates, and I worried about a lack of voter enthusiasm and turnout.
And then suddenly, just like that, Joe Biden, a candidate far from my first tier of choices, got an endorsement from Rep. James Clyburn and then decisively won the South Carolina primary. As soon as that happened on Saturday, the moderates Klobouchar and Buttigieg both dropped out of the race. Frankly, I had thought that Biden, the early leader in the polls, was going to be 2020's version of Jeb Bush and fail to gather any traction, but then on Super Tuesday, an event that everyone thought was going to be Sanders' breakaway moment, Biden rode the momentum from South Carolina and swept the southern states and beat Sanders in several others. Today, Warren formally dropped out of the race.
So now, just like that, the race is between Sanders and Biden, and Biden seems to have the upper hand.
Look, I'll vote for anyone running against Trump - a second Trump term, in my humble opinion, would be nothing short of an existential threat to American democracy and the future of our republic. But for very different reasons, neither Bernie Sanders nor Joe Biden, both white hetero males with an average age of about 78, were my idea of how America was going to be led into the future.
But I'll vote for either one. I'll even endorse and champion their cause.
Meanwhile, still yet another four days of rain finally ended today. A total of 4 inches of rain fell this week, and the current forecast is calling for five more days of rain starting next Tuesday. But the new roof held and I didn't have any leaks through the ceiling or beneath the back door. The contractor for the new gutters to compliment the roof came out today to take some measurements and estimate the job.
Back in the 60s, Bob Dylan sang "A Hard Rain's A-Gonna Fall," and this year, it's felt like it, both politically and meteorologically.
