Georgia has the fourth-worst high school graduation rate. The fifth-highest number of uninsured people. The sixth-worst poverty level in the nation. Rural hospitals are shutting down because of the state's refusal to enact a key part of the Affordable Care Act, and as a result of legislators' inaction, parents must watch their children suffer from illness while treatment remains just out of reach.
What Georgia does have is a brand new "Guns Everywhere" bill that allows gun owners to carry in bars, churches, schools, and government buildings. The law allows an establish to refuse to allow people to carry, but a person will not be guilty of a violation if he or she immediately exits the building when notified of a failure to clear security. Other provisions of the bill would also remove the requirement of fingerprinting for renewal of concealed weapons licenses, prohibit the state from creating and maintaining a database of concealed weapons permit holders, and prevent police officers from even asking to check people's permits.
Gun owners caught carrying firearms without a permit, convicted felons, and those under the influence of alcohol or drugs would be allowed to invoke the Stand Your Ground defense when using deadly force. So could anyone who discharges a gun in a place where the weapons are deemed illegal.
So if I understand this law correctly, Georgia will have thousands, or tens of thousands, of uneducated, uninsured, poor people, possibly hungry, possibly desperate for medical attention or medical attention for their loved one, carrying guns just about anywhere they want, without fear of retribution, and knowing that if challenged, their best defense is to shoot and claim "Stand Your Ground."
What could possibly go wrong with that?
