Zola Jesus, The Earl, Atlanta

So Rocktober comes down to this: one last intensive run of almost continuous shows for the rest of the week.  Rocktober, which started somewhat arbitrarily sometime back in September (I'm not sure if it started before or after Music Midtown), will end with a definitive climax.

This run of shows is probably fall-out from last weekend's CMJ Music Marathon up in New York.  Several hundred bands participate in the event, and eventually they all have to go home.  No small number of those bands live in or around New York and the return trip is inconsequential, but many others have long drives back to LA or Portland or Seattle or elsewhere, and try to make some money by picking up a few gigs on their return trip.  Atlanta, Georgia is a common stop for these brief tours, at least until all of the venues get booked up.  The same thing happens here before and after Austin's SXSW.

So tonight, Zola Jesus, apparently one of the standout performers from this year's CMJ, played The Earl.  Here's a KEXP video of a recent non-CMJ performance.

Here's about the only picture I could salvage from her performance at the Earl:

Pittsburgh's Xanopticon, who opened for Zola Jesus at her (Le) Poisson Rouge CMJ show, did the same at The Earl tonight.

This evening's show also included Atlanta's Featureless Ghost, whom I saw open for Twin Sister back on June 5 at 529.
