Warpaint
Fountain Green Stage, Bumbershoot. After Broken Social Scene, Warpaint was my second-most anticipated set of the day. Warpaint is an all-female quartet that play an inventive brand of indie rock, full of driving rhythms and complex melodies. They seem focused more on their sound than the lyrical content of their songs (which is meant as a compliment), as exemplified in their extended closing number, "Elephant," during which the band explored the various, almost jazzy, interplay between each musician and the drummer. Yes, they're fun to look at, and yes, they sound great, and yes, they're true artists in every sense of the word.
