It's a Daruma (達磨 or だるま). Daruma is the Japanese name for Bodhidharma, and also for hollow Japanese dolls with no arms and legs modelled after Bodhidharma. Wikipedia has an excellent discussion of their uses, but I was just photoshopping for play.
