Jazz Notes

I posted about him here just last month, and now on the first day of the new year 2024, I learned that the great musician, keyboardist, and singer Les McCann passed away last Friday, December 29, at age 88. Pneumonia. Impermanence is swift.

An innovator on the use of electric instruments in jazz, McCann's accomplishments are many. He's probably best known, however, for his song, Compared To What, and especially its live performance at the Montreux Jazz Festival in 1969 along with saxophonist Eddie Harris.

If you want to do a deeper dive into McCann's music, I recommend the albums Layers and Invitation to Openness
