No One Plays 70's-Style Samba Anymore . . .

This is contemporary Brazilian musician Rogé's 2023 cover of Luiz Melodia's Mistério Da Raça, from the 1980 album Nós. The song is a paen to cachaça, a relative of rum distilled from fermented sugarcane juice popular in Brazil.

Rogé now lives in L.A. (or so I've heard) and is well situated to be a break-out cross-over star for nuevo samba (if I can coin a term).  Rogé's most recent LP, which includes Mistério Da Raça, is titled Curyman. The album was produced by Thomas Brenneck (Dap Tones Records, Menahan Street Band, The Budos Band, Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings, and El Michels Affair). Brenneck cultivated the music and career of the late Charles Bradley, has performed and recorded with Amy Winehouse, and has produced on projects with Lady Gaga, CeeLo Green, Dan Auerbach, Beyoncé & Jay-Z, Father John Misty, Rufus Wainwright, and Miley Cyrus.  String arrangements on Curyman are by Arthur Verocai, a veteran of 70s tropicalia who has worked with Jorge Ben Jor and Caetano Veloso.

You can purchase a copy of Curyman for $10 (cheap) over on Bandcamp.
