Why indeed? Especially after we just heard the best of all possible von Hausswolff news. Alert readers will recall that her song The Mysterious Disappearance of Electra tied for our pick of best song of 2018 along with Lonnie Holley's I Woke Up In A Fucked Up America. Well, we recently learned that, now sit down for this, Anna and her sister Maria will both be on the next Swans album!
In certain music circles, this is like hearing that Mick Jagger will be the new lead singer for the Beatles, or to update things a little for our younger readers, that Post Malone is joining the Jonas Brothers. Anna's music always reminded us more of Swans than anybody else, and now she's going to be contributing to their next undoubtedly epic effort! This is wonderful.
Okay, you say, but what about Anna's dad? Fair question. It turns out that her father, Carl Michael von Hausswolff, is a renowned avant garde composer in his own right. Today, it was announced that the elder von Hausswolff is releasing a new record under the name Dark Morph, which is basically a collaboration between von Hausswolff and Jónsi of the Icelandic band Sigur Rós. The first single from the album, titled BEKA YALO, is a challenging listen, incorporating field recordings of humpback whales and bats and a lot of distorted sounds that we can't fully identify.
So good news all around. And as if things couldn't get any better, the new incarnation of Swans will also include, in addition to the von Hausswolff sisters, the return of, wait for it, percussionist extraordinaire Thor Harris.
Anna and Thor together in a band and one fronted by Michael Gira at that, while her dad is off on a collab with Sigur Rós? See, we told 2019 was going to be a good year for music.
