Five people in Louisiana and two in Florida have died from Vibrio vulnificus, a flesh-eating bacteria that thrives in warm coastal waters. Vibrio are most common from May through October where seawater tends to be warmer. Due to climate change, however, outbreaks have occurred in recent years in places once thought to be too cold to support the bacteria, such as Chesapeake Bay and the Long Island Sound.
