Adam Yauch, aka MCA of the Beastie Boys, died today, May 4, 2012, at the age of 47. He leaves behind a daughter and a wife, the Tibetan activist Dechen Wangdu.
In 2009, Mr. Yauch was diagnosed and treated for a cancerous parotid gland and a lymph node and underwent surgery and radiation therapy. A practicing Buddhist, he traveled to Dharamsala, India, following his surgery. "I'm taking Tibetan medicine," he announced, "and at the recommendation of the Tibetan doctors, I've been eating a vegan/organic diet." He also attended a three-day teaching course with the Dalai Lama and spent time visiting a nunnery.
Mr. Yauch remained committed to social causes and across-the-board equality until the very end of his life, and marched across the Brooklyn Bridge with Occupy Wall Street protesters last November.

"Whether one believes in a religion or not, and whether one believes in rebirth or not, there isn't anyone who doesn't appreciate kindness and compassion." - His Holiness, the Dalai Lama (from Kindness, Clarity, and Insight)
